"Having spent 3 months in Brazil with Tearfund in 2016, I came back to Brazil in Autumn 2017 to start life as a full-time missionary. After some unexpected twists and turns, I’m volunteering with an NGO called Compassiva, in the heart of São Paulo (I met my fiancé, Marcos, here, and he also works here). They have two umbrella projects, LAR (Taking Assistance to the Refugee, LAR means HOME in Portuguese) and Compassiva in the Streets which works with Brazilian men, women and children living in the precarious neighbourhood we’re headquartered on the edge of.

I’m working in Compassiva’s office, where my time is spent searching for and writing grant proposals, helping with social media and writing articles, and translation – as well as anything else that needs doing, as is typical of a small NGO! I particularly enjoy helping run a craft workshop for local Brazilian women every week, and a soap-making workshop for female refugees which ultimately aims to give them some financial autonomy.  I am also involved with a charity called 27 Million which is specifically focused on fighting modern slavery. In a stage of transition and reconstruction, currently their main project is Block Party, where volunteers take food, drink, music and prayer into the red-light district to share some of God’s love with the women working there, and to disrupt the trade for a few hours. I’m on the Educational Team, using my MA in Slavery and Liberation to ensure our volunteers and supporters have an intellectual grounding in the issue."
